Phil’s career at a glance

- Andy Mcgilvray

Phil O’donnell made his Motherwell debut against St Mirren in 1990-91 under Tommy Mclean, and scored in the epic 4-3 Scottish Cup win over Dundee United that same season.

The following season Phil became the youngest Motherwell player in Europe in a Cup Winners’cup tie against GKS Katowice.

During his four-year spell at Motherwell, Phil was capped once for Scotland, playing 15 minutes against Switzerland in September 93.

That caught Celtic’s eye and he moved to the Glasgow giants in September 1994 for £1.75m, which is still the highest amount Motherwell have received for a player.

Although he won the Scottish Cup and Scottish Premier League with Celtic, injuries limited Phil’s playing time and he moved to Sheffield Wednesday in 1999, where that continued.

Phil played once in his first season, and just 20 times over a four-year spell, before being released in 2003.

Motherwell gave him a chance to train and he signed in January 2004, becoming captain in 2005/06.
