season, and it knocks you back months in your planning.

“The current group are all signed up for two years to help me stabilise the team and hopefully create a more competitive squad, going forward.

“I’m also planning to arrange a loan deal with senior clubs to further enhance the squad.

“We started our preseason programme on Saturday – I like to get in first when it comes to preseason training.

“We trained at Bellahouston Park, to suit the Glasgow boys in our squad, but there was a fairly small turn-out due to players returning from holidays on Saturday and Sunday. I hope for a much better turn-out for our second session on Tuesday.”

The club will host their annual Newmains Tournament at Victoria Park on July 22, with teams to be announced later this month.

The tournament took place last year to mark the club’s 10th anniversary, with Wishaw, Carluke Rovers, Cambusnethan Talbot and a development Queen of the South side competing over the weekend.

Wishaw won the tournament, which raised money for the charity Epilepsy Scotland.

Newmains start their preseason friendly programme at Maryhill on Wednesday, July 19, with the Newmains Tournament three days later.

United follow that up with a friendly at Cumnock on July 27, and another at Muirkirk on July 29.

The opening friendly at Maryhill is at Lochburn Park and kicks off at 7.15pm.
