NO DAE THAT! Cheeky Hamilton prankster gives one of the BIG Stampede statues the Duke of Wellington treatment

- Kirsten Mcstay

Hamilton woke up to a new landmark in the town centre on Tuesday morning — after a prankster added a new feature to one of The BIG Stampede statues.

Jiggy the Giraffe, who is situated outside the Primark store in Quarry Street, had a cone placed on his head — just like the well-known Duke of Wellington landmark in Glasgow’s George Square.

And the giant sculpture, which was painted by Jenny Leonard and is sponsored by Crossbasket Nursery, quickly became popular with shoppers wanting to take a selfie.

The cheeky accessory for Jiggy comes a couple of weeks after a lion sculpture, dubbed Sekhmet and located outside the Barrhead Travel shop on Quarry Street, was damaged by a vandal.

However, the public are queuing up to have their picture taken with the giant giraffe and his cone.

Jungle fever hit Hamilton a few weeks ago when more than 100 safari animals invaded Hamilton town centre.

They are all part of The BIG Stampede, which will see the colourful sculptures spend their summer in the town.

The giant elephants, lions, gorillas, giraffes, rhinos and baby hippos are all dotted around Hamilton town centre, waiting for you to pay them a visit.

Organised by Hamilton Business Improvement District, the creatures will be on display until the end of August — when they will take part in a special auction to raise money for Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, the official charity partner of The BIG Stampede.

And that money will help to support the 168,000 babies, children and young people treated at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow every year — thousands of whom are from Lanarkshire.
