It’s no cakewalk for pals
A group of pals really held a cake smash with a difference – by racing a model cake in London.
Kenny Mckinnon, from Blantyre; Kane Sinclair, Hamilton, and Moose Baxter – originally from Hamilton but now living in England – marked their mate Alan Bayley’s 50th birthday by taking part in the Red Bull Soapbox Race at Alexandra Palace on Sunday.
The international event sees amateur drivers race homemade soapbox vehicles to compete against the clock in a downhill race.
Uddingston man Alan noted last year that his 50th celebrations fell on the same day as the infamous race in London, and it wasn’t long before sketches were being drawn up.
And the unique design – featuring 50 birthday“candles”with 50 balloons to be added on the day – was chosen as one of only 70 from 4000 entries to take part by event organisers.
The lads brought their own party to the crowds by dishing out birthday cake, then took to the stage for a dance routine as part of their entry before setting off along the route.
Part of the routine included a balloon release, each one with a card attached urging those who find them to get in touch and claim a gift from the lads.
Kenny explained:“after hitting a jump called the lolly drop Alan lost control and spun the soapbox. The back wheel bent and the cake exploded everywhere.
“Moose then lifted the soapbox up with all still in it and pushed him over the line. He is a natural born hero never leaves someone’s goal unfulfilled!
“Alan turned 50 and his one idea that he thought would make him happy made thousands of people happy in the process.
“He didn’t know it would have that affect but it did and I am very proud of my friends for doing that.”
