Top honour for professor
Royal Society of Chemistry award
A Hamilton professor has been awarded a prestigious honour for his work in the chemical sciences industry.
Professor Harry Kelly, who works at GSK (Glaxosmithkline) Medicines Research Centre, has been named the Royal Society of Chemistry Inspiration and Industry Award winner for 2017.
As programme director of GSK’S professional development programme, Professor Kelly focuses on recruiting the highest quality chemical scientists from diverse backgrounds.
These chemists, who include chemistry graduates, postgraduates and over 40 chemistry industrial placement students from across Europe each year, are responsible for discovering and making new medicines within research and development laboratories.
On receiving the award, Professor Kelly said: “I am truly delighted to receive this prestigious award, which reflects the commitment of many people across the chemistry community, to develop the chemists of the future.”
The award is given in recognition of an individual’s or team’s impact on the local or national community in relation to the promotion of careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Award winners, who all work for companies in the chemistry industry, are chosen by a panel of senior scientists,
Aurora Antemir, head of industry at the Royal Society of Chemistry, said:“the chemical sciences industry makes an enormous contribution to society worldwide, bringing value to the economy, and improving everyday lives.
“As the professional body for chemists, it is a pleasure and an honour to recognise the outstanding achievements and inspirational stories of chemical scientists from across the industrial sector, from apprentices to CEOS.”
