Strongman Robert is set to be power of Scotland
Burnbank contender is delighted with qualification for SA
Hamilton man Robert Mcaulay this week said representing Scotland at the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships in September is a dream come true.
The 24-year-old, of Burnbank, is relishing joining his fellow Team Scotland athletes at the forthcoming competition in South Africa and is training rigorously to be at his best ahead of the championships.
A former pupil at St John Ogilvie High, Robert, who only took up powerlifting eight months ago, undergoes a strict six-day-a-week training schedule which includes a healthy eating plan and measuring his daily calorie intake.
As well as his strict training with the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships being non-funded, the trainee personal trainer has just eight weeks to secure funding to enable him to purchase the specific equipment required to compete in the championships as well as pay for flights, accommodation and accessories.
Robert, who trains at the Hostile Strength and Conditioning gym in Flemington, Motherwell, explained: “I’m absolutely delighted to have qualified for the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships. Not to sound corny, but to be able to represent my country at a major tournament like this is a dream come true.
“Growing up I always wanted to do something for Scotland, and admired Olympic athletes so when I made the weights at three separate lifts for qualification – my most being 175 kg at competition level – I couldn’t believe that I’d done it!
“All the hard work and discipline has really paid off, and it was thanks to my friend too who got me into powerlifting and made me apply for the championships.”
