Accies make a point

-

Hamilton Accies took a bonus point from a 6-5 penalty shoot-out win over Queen of the South, following a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

Young striker Steven Boyd scored his first Accies goal in 87 minutes, volleying a botched clearance past Allan Martin from the edge of the box.

However, experienced Queens hitman Stephen Dobbie bundled the ball home from close range less than a minute later, although it appeared there had been a foul on goalkeeper Garywoods.

Accies had gone close twice before Boyd’s strike, with Georgios Sarris sending a low shot inches past, before Ali Crawford’s curling free kick was superbly saved by ex-hamilton keeper Martin.

The match moved into penalties, with Hamilton getting off to a bad start after Grant Gillespie and Danny Redmond saw their efforts saved by Martin, while Queens netted theirs.

Crawford and Sarris converted their spot-kicks, with Woods saving an effort from Queens. The Dumfries side scored, Rakish Bingham netted to keep his side in the game, and Woods saved again.

Boyd calmly struck his penalty hard into the top corner, followed by successful spot-kicks from Darian Mackinnon and David Templeton to put Accies in front.

Queens’darren Brownlie stepped up to take the 16th penalty, but Woods somehow clawed it over the bar.
