Canzo fumes at Accies cup defeat

-

Raging Hamilton boss Martin Canning tore into his Betfred Cup flops on Tuesday night and promised changes for Saturday’s visit by Stenhousemuir.

Accies’ Group G qualification hopes were dealt a blow after Albion Rovers’s last-gasp leveller for 4-4 took the game to a penalty shoot-out. And the Coatbridge side kept their heads to win that 4-2 to bank the bonus point.

That means Accies must beat Stenny to progress. Canning said:“i made nine changes, I gave the boys an opportunity to go and play. But from what I saw there are not a lot of them going to force their way into my team.

“With the quality we have we should have been able to win the game.

“We put ourselves into a position to do that three times but weren’t able to see it through.

“We didn’t do enough to be professional, get over the line and get the job done. If you defend like that you’re not going to win games.

“What you can’t do is play the same 11 in the four cup games and then start the season with them – you have to give your squad a game, they have to all play, so that was an opportunity to make a few changes. I didn’t think I was putting us in a position where we couldn’t win the game.

“We know we can defend a lot better than that and we need to.

“The league season starts in two weeks, so we need to make sure that’s what we’re building towards.

“But now we have to make sure we get through in the cup. We have to go and win on Saturday, our full focus for now.

“Saturday’s team will be different. We’ll look at it again and see what team we put out and hopefully we will get that one right and win the game.”
