Team Lanarkshire scooped 15 medals at the weekend in what has been described as the ‘best British Transplant Games ever’.

The Games — which were hosted by North Lanarkshire from July 27 to 30 — attracted teams from all over the UK, with more than 750 children and adults taking part in various sports.

Team Lanarkshire took 15 medals from what has been described as the ‘best British Transplant Games ever’.

Chief amongst the medalwinners was Law Village’s Ross Broom (29), who won gold in javelin, silver in discus and swimming relay and bronze in basketball and shot putt.

Other medal winners from Team Lanarkshire include Hamilton’s Elaine Zanjani (55) who won bronze in 10pin bowling, William Bell of Motherwell who took bronze in basketball and javelin, and Bellshill’s Patrick O’hara (38), who won gold in archery and silver in fishing.

The Games took place between July 27 and 30 at venues across North Lanarkshire, but some in South Lanarkshire, including Hamilton.

Teams from all over the UK took part in multiple sports, with more than 750 children and adults involved and more than 2000 family members and supporters were in attendance.

Transplant Sport chairman Andy Eddy and Graham Moore, chairman of event sponsor Westfield Health, said it was “the best Transplant Games ever”.

Councillor Jim Logue, leader of North Lanarkshire Council welcomed the news as he looked back on a great four days of sport, which culminated in a huge celebration event at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell on Sunday.

He said: “It’s extremely gratifying that, in its 40th year, the Westfield Health British Transplant Games in North Lanarkshire was described as the best ever by both Andy and Graham at the closing celebration.

“It has been an amazing four days with some truly inspiring moments, and it really brings home the importance of organ donation and how it can change and save lives.

“I’m extremely proud of every member of council staff who has been involved and the teams from our partners at North Lanarkshire Council and Culture NL.

“The response from the community has been fantastic, with a huge number of volunteers helping out and thousands of pounds raised to help host the Games.

“I’d also like to thank our sponsors, without whom it would have been impossible to host this event.”

The Games saw athletes, aged between three and 82, compete in 23 sports over four days of competition, in what is a celebration of transplantation and raises awareness of the organ donor register.
