Animal sculptures get street art treatment

Wacky accessories raise a chuckle

- Kirsten Mcstay

Pranksters have once again recreated Glasgow’s famous Duke of Wellington landmark - by sneaking cones onto Hamilton’s BIG Stampede sculptures.

As reported in the Advertiser, shoppers queued to have pictures taken with Jiggy the Giraffe outside Primark in the town centre after a cone was stuck on his head.

And last week, more animals have been given the traffic cone treatment, with the giraffe and rhino sculptures near Asda and Frankie and Benny’s sporting brand new orange accessories.

Many took to our Facebook page to like our story and discuss the latest addition to the sculptures.

Marc Biagioni posted: “It’s hilarious. Seen it the other day and thought it was brilliant. Scottish culture.”

The BIG Stampede arrived in Hamilton a few weeks ago when more than 100 safari animals invaded the town centre.

They are all part of The BIG Stampede, which will see the colourful sculptures spend their summer in the town.

The giant elephants, lions, gorillas, giraffes, rhinos and baby hippos are dotted around Hamilton town centre.

Organised by Hamilton Business Improvement District, the creatures will be on display until the end of August – when they will take part in a special auction to raise money for Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, the official charity partner of The BIG Stampede.

And that money will help to support the 168,000 babies, children and young people treated at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow every year – thousands of whom are from Lanarkshire.

Gareth Walker, manager at Hamilton BID, added: “It is absolutely fantastic to see all the animals in their new home .

“A huge amount of work has gone into the trail, and it is exciting to finally share each wonderful piece of artwork as the animals proudly take up their new residence. Each artist has done an incredible job and with such an array on show, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The local pupils have created some fabulous designs and we hope they enjoy visiting their special sculptures on the trail.”
