There are friends to be made in church
Rev Ross Blackman, Hamilton Old Parish Church
Often life seems to be one long series of transactions. We pay for our holidays and then Christmas is just around the corner, and so on. Special occasions come around so quickly.
There are presents to think about and purchase. The rent or mortgage can be a constant whisper, not to mention other bills.
Perhaps I’m just a little maudlin because the holidays are over!
The things we buy seem so tangible, but they are used up and disappear so quickly, like ice-cream or candyfloss at the fair.
On the other hand, there are things that we often discount as intangible that might have more far-reaching consequences.
Jesus said:“what does it profit someone to gain the whole world but lose their soul? Or, what would you give to buy your soul?”(mark 8:36-37).
What might it cost? What does it cost even to find out? A little time?
At a time where attending church and other activities registers less, I wonder why some see it as expensive.
An hour a week barely amounts to a couple of days over a year, yet we wouldn’t blink at a weekend break.
If inclined to give, a few pounds donation wouldn’t buy a movie, a bottle of E-liquid, or a glass of something.
Yet, in church, there are friends to be made and it is good for the soul.
As I said last week, life and faith are not a holiday. They last far longer than that, but are we as serious about them? What would you give?
