Biggar’s top ten hit

Club wins Moffat 10s

- Andy Mcgilvray

Biggar Rugby Club came out on top in their first visit to the Moffat 10s tournament last weekend.

The county side recorded wins over Stewartry, Hawick Linden and then Newton Stewart in the final.

Biggar got off to a slow start and it took a lastminute winner by Andrew Peacock to record a win over Stewartry.

With eight teams in the competition that took Biggar into the semifinals and, playing their best rugby of the day, they progressed into the final.

A tense final saw neither Biggar nor Newton Stewart able to capitalise on their chances and Ewan Bogle got the match-winning try.

The focus now moves onto the Sevens game, with Biggar travelling to Peebles for the first in this season’s King of the Sevens championship.

Biggar have been given a tough draw for it, in a pool comprising Kelso and last season’s ‘Kings’ Watsons. The action at Peebles starts at 1.30pm.

The Hartree Mill club was also pleased with nine of their youth section players representing Glasgow and the West in a series of inter-district matches.

Will Kelly played at under-16 level, with Glasgow losing against Caledonia but beating Edinburgh, while Luhann Kotze, Lewis and Matthew Stewart featured at under-18 level.

Ross Jackson, Andrew Jardine, Guy Kelly, Andrew Nimmo and Peter Steele all played at under-20.

The 18s and 20s both defeated Caledonia, but the 18s lost to Edinburgh.

Although Andrew Jardine has moved to Melrose, Peter Steele is now at Glasgow Hawks and Ross Jackson is with Marr, Biggar take some pride in having developed them as players.

The next round of games sees Glasgow 16s and 18s take on the Borders at Lasswade on Sunday, August 6, while the 20s meet the Borders a week later on August 13.

Biggar are happy with response to their summer camps, but there are still spaces for others.

The camps are aimed at coaching but with the emphasis on developing fitness, skills and game understanding, with smallsided games a feature.

Rugby manager Nic Humphries, development officer Andrew Barnett and modern apprentice Ioni Mcpherson are registering youngsters for the camps, which take place at Hartree Mill from Monday, August 7 until the 11th, with a 9/9.30am start and 4/4.30pm finish. The full week is £80 for members, £100 for non-members.
