This will be best year yet

Volunteers in Hamilton are gearing up for what they hope is the most successful Fairhill Fun Day ever.

That’s a big ambition, given that the popular event has attracted 1500 people at a time, since it was started back in 2013.

Fairhill Community Group run the event, which is taking place on Saturday, September 9, from 12pm-4pm at South Lanarkshire Lifestyles centre, with donations and help from the wider community. It’s entirely free of charge, and everyone is welcome.

A Community Cafe in Trinity Church and a Food Co-op in the Lifestyles Centre provides funds for the event, but there is help from elsewhere.

Sponsorship and donations have been received from the Fairhill community, Community Learning Home School Partnership, Universal Connections, Buchanan Mcpherson Colour Printers, Community Links (South Lanarkshire), South Lanarkshire Council, and South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture.

It all adds up to providing an incredibly successful fun day, and that is reward for all the hard work that goes into it.

Paul Hayward from Fairhill Community Group said: “The whole thing is made possible by volunteers, who are all local. The Community Cafe in Trinity Church and the Food Co-op in Fairhill Lifestyles give us funds that go into the fun day, and there is something for everyone.

“There will be stalls selling things like jewellery, crafts and all types, really. Some of the items in the stalls are donated.

“There will be other activities, such as a magician called the Great Nivaldo, balloon tying, bouncy castle, Owl Magic and Universal Connections Boogie Bus.

“It’s an event that is really well turned out, we’ve had 1500 people before, and it is really popular. We put funds towards it to help make sure it is run smoothly. Our community development workers Liz Jamieson and Jacqueline Queen work really hard, and we get inquiries about the fun day, and to book stalls all year round.

“Last year our event was in September and we had people calling us up straight after it, asking when it was going to be this year. It is becoming a solid part of the Fairhill community.

“It’s quite small, but it’s a huge thing and the interest is fantastic.

“Unlike other events it’s free, open to all, and it’s a great day out for the whole family. It’s also good to meet other people and take part in all the fun activities.”

Stalls can still be booked and if you would like to help the group they can be emailed at fairhillcommunitygroup2016@gmail.com.
