LEAP into activities at over-50s classes

Programme keeps growing

- Robert Mitchell

A charity that helps elderly people is expanding into Hamilton with some activity classes.

Over-50s are being invited to the sessions that are coming to Burnbank, Fairhill, Hillhouse and Whitehill.

Lightburn Elderly Association Project (LEAP) have been working in the area recently, and already offer befriending and handyperson services.

Now they are also introducing carpet bowls, art classes, tai chi, IT help and sing-a-longs into Hamilton.

LEAP’S adult learning co-ordinator, Catriona Macgregor, said: “I’m delighted that LEAP has been able to secure funding from the People’s Health Trust to expand our activity classes to the Hamilton area. LEAP already has a substantial and successful programme of classes running in Cambuslang, Rutherglen, Uddingston and Bothwell and it’s great that we’ve now got the opportunity to expand these to other areas of South Lanarkshire.

“I’d encourage anyone over 50 with an interest in the sessions that we’re running this August in Hamilton, to get in touch and come along to try them out.”

The charity will be delivering a programme of sessions for people aged over 50 starting the week beginning August 21.

Carpet bowls and ‘new age kurling’ will take place from 10am to noon every Wednesday in Hillhouse Community Centre. New age kurling is a cross between bowling and curling, and a carpet bowls lane will run at the same time.

Fairhill Lifestyles Centre will host singing sessions every Wednesday from 3pm to 4pm, and the organisers say that even if you think you can’t carry a tune, you’ll be surprised at how good you can sound with a bit of encouragement and practice.

Tai chi classes will take place every Monday from noon to 1pm, in a venue that is still to be confirmed. The slow, meditative movements can aid relaxation while improving balance and posture.

Art for beginners will take place on Thursdays from 10am to noon in the Burnbank Centre. No previous experience of drawing or painting is necessary.

A computing class for beginners will tae place from 1pm to 3pm on Tuesdays and from 10am until noon on Fridays. The venue has still to be confirmed.

Attendance for the first four weeks is free, and
