Crazy crew hit the target

-

Free Fire (15)

Think Reservoir Dogs with a larger cast and even more crazed characters and you get Free Fire.

The latest flick from Kill List and High-rise director Ben Wheatley is his most streamlined, plot-wise, yet.

And it’s a riot from start to finish that rarely takes a breath between shootouts, double-crosses and putdowns.

The Handmaiden (18)

Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Stoker) is no stranger to, erm, strange tales and this provocative drama is no different.

Dripping with sexual tension and nerve-shredding torture, it makes the Fifty Shades movies look mighty tame in comparison.

Excellent performances across the board are worthy of the material.

Ghost in the Shell (12)

Scarlett Johansson’s otherworldly quality makes her a wise choice to bring the iconic role of Major to life in this live-action take on the seminal 1995 anime.

But the coldness of the character translates better in cartoon form and, in general, Ghost in the Shell 2017 is inferior to its predecessor.

Director Rupert Sanders’ biggest strength is his aesthetic style, with his eye for detail creating neon-tinted cityscapes and gadgets that would leave even James Bond mystified.

Fans of the anime will also be pleased to see its most iconic moments recreated effectively. But the script struggles to get across the rich themes and underlying messages found throughout the original.
