Wishaw opened their Sectional League Cup campaign with a 0-0 draw at Carluke, then beat Newmains 3-1 at Victoria Park on Saturday to claim top spot with a goal difference of one.

Dean Kindlan, Michael Collander and Vinnie Mcguire were the scorers, with the usually-reliable Ryan Smillie having a penalty saved by Connor Orr.

On Monday Wishaw called in former Thorniewood United pairing John Fallon and David Fitzpatrick as an interim management team.

John, who had a spell as Shettleston manager last season, said: “We got a good response from the players and will look after the team on Saturday, then we will have a chat about the situation on Sunday.”

Wishaw are at home to Shotts on Saturday.

Shotts opened their card with a 4-3 win at Newmains, with new signing Steve Aitken hitting a double, but the hosts pulled level at half-time, with goals from Ben Fitzpatrick and Jay Burns.

Greg Eadie made it 3-2 in 49 minutes and Aitken notched his hat-trick five minutes later.

David Mccreadie wrapped up the scoring at 4-3 in 65 minutes.

Assistant manager Paul Finnigan said: “It was a decent attacking show, but we have to look at closing the back door.

“It was quite tight, but we allowed it to get that way.

“Our first half was poor, but on a positive note we scored four goals and Steve Aitken scored a hat-trick, which will give him a boost, and it’s three points for us.”

Shotts drew 3-3 with Gartcairn on Saturday, with Danny Burns, Aitken and Scott Mchaffie scoring.
