It’s a hard duck story but Waddle scrubs up well after bird bath

-

The Scottish SPCA are currently caring for a Muscovy duck who was discovered covered in oil.

A team from the charity’s animal rescue centre in Hamilton raced to the aid of the bird on Thursday, August 3.

The animal welfare charity were alerted after the duck got stuck among machinery and covered in oil in Motherwell.

And after receiving a bird bath, the duck is being rehabilitated at the charity’s National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Fishcross, where she was named Waddle.

Centre manager Colin Seddon said:“waddle is lucky to be alive. Thankfully all machinery at the factory was off for maintenance, otherwise she might not have survived.

“We have a purposebuilt oil removal section at our wildlife centre where we were able to successfully remove all contaminants from her feathers.

“Washing contaminated birds is a skilled and time-consuming job and we have the facilities to clean up to four birds at a time. On average it will take about 30 minutes per wash but depending on the species, it can take anything from ten minutes to four hours.

“Waddle received her first wash when she initially arrived at the centre, which removed most of the oil, but she required a further wash to remove the remaining oil which took place on Monday, August 7.

“We’re looking to rehome her to a loving home as she’s now fully recovered and waterproof. Anyone interested should contact our centre in Lanarkshire on 03000 999 999.”

Anyone who discovers an injured or distressed wild animal should call the Scottish SPCA animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
