Brogan takes Wishaw job

West Region to kick-off ’Wood’s derby success

-

John Brogan left Lanark United at the weekend to become the new manager of Wishaw on Sunday, and take his first training session on Monday.

Joining him in his move are his backroom team of Colin Mitchell, who was formerly at Bellshill, and Scott Gemmell, who coached Motherwell United.

“It was a big decision to leave Lanark, here’s hoping it was the right one,” said former St Johnstone and Hamilton Accies striker Brogan.

“I enjoyed my two-and-ahalf years at Lanark but I felt it was the right time for a change and to come here, because it is an ambitious club.

“My first game will be at Yoker Athletic where I spent six years as a manager, so it will be interesting to go back there.”

Wishaw chairman Bill Kilgour said: “I think we have the right men to take the club forward, not just on the field but off it as well.

“John is so professional everything he does.

“He has a wealth of experience in the Juniors, but also has good contacts in the senior game.” The West Region League will kick-off in its current format on Saturday for the last time before major reconstruction takes place.

Larkhall Thistle, who won the Central First Division title last season, make their Super First Division debut at Darvel.

In the Central First Division there’s one county derby when Thorniewood United take on Blantyre Vics, with in home matches for Lesmahagow against Port Glasgow and Forth Wanderers, who host Greenock.

Wishaw are away to Yoker Athletic, and Shotts Bon Accord are at East Kilbride Thistle.

In the Central Second Division Royal Albert are at home to Gartcairn, and Newmains United host Carluke Rovers, while Bellshill visit Dunipace and Lanark United travel to Vale of Clyde. Thorniewood United earned the bragging rights on Saturday with a 4-3 win at home to Bellshill to set up a crunch clash at Shettleston last night (Wednesday).

That tussle will have decided who qualifies from Sectional League Cup section three and into the knock-out stages.

Aaron Neil and Gary Livingstone put ’Wood 2-0 ahead but Darren Ferguson conceded an own-goal and Scott Symon equalised before half-time.

Damon Welsh restored ’Wood’s lead, Richard Kane equalised despite Bellshill’s Dylan Simpson being sent off, and Livingstone hit the winner.

Bellshill produced a sound performance to hold section leaders Petershill to a 1-1 draw at Rockburn Park last Wednesday, when Richard Kane scored.
