Motherwell were left scratching their heads after going down 4-1 as they were reduced to eight men at St Johnstone.

The visitors dominated for long spells at Mcdiarmid Park in Perth but were a goal down at the interval, Steven Mclean and Michael O’halloran scoring for Saints and Andy Rose pulling one back for Motherwell.

Keeper Trevor Carson was redcarded in 63 minutes for handling outside the box before O’halloran made it 3-1.

Then Carl Mchugh was shown a second yellow card and Charles Dunne was given a straight red in the dying stages for denying a clear goal-scoring chance – although TV pictures appeared to show his innocence. Murray Davidson made it 4-1. ’Well boss Stephen Robinson said: “We were very much in the game at 2-1 and the turning point was the red card for Carson. We dominated while making individual errors for their goals and that’s something we need to rectify.

“The red card for Carson was the wrong call as the ball was on the line – he wasn’t outside the box.

“As for Charles Dunne, from what we’ve seen from video footage he didn’t even touch their player.

“In the move that led to their first goal there was a handball by Davidson. He touches the ball but they got the free-kick. I can’t control decisionmaking from the ref – but I can make our defending better.”
