Milton view Armed Forces’ sacrifice

-

Dear Editor, Since January 1948 a significant number of members of HM Armed Forces have died in service for various reasons; some 4500 with home and family the length and breadth of Scotland.

The Ministry of Defence recently supplied a very comprehensive list with much information including which town or area they were from, but not street addresses. Three hundred and forty had homes and families were in Lanarkshire.

Since 2012 both North and South Lanarkshire councils have in one way or another commemorated those whose lives were lost.

Other Scottish local authorities are considering their own position. With the valued assistance of the Council of Scottish Local Authorities the matter will be brought to the attention of all of the 32 in Scotland.

Between January 1922 and September 1939 members of HM Armed Forces died in service. The Ministry of Defence are unable to provide a comprehensive list, though it may be possible that information could be obtained from other sources.

If any reader would wish to have someone commemorated they are invited to contact Mr D Maxwell South Lanarkshire Council bereavement services 0303 123 1016 or North Lanarkshire Council open spaces and cemeteries 01698 506318.

Joe Allan, East Kilbride Historical Society, Franklin Place, East Kilbride,g75 8LS Dear Editor, Every year 3700 people in Scotland are diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Luckily, when my mum was diagnosed with the disease it was spotted early when survival rates are higher and she has now recovered. Physical activity plays an important part in stacking the odds against a bowel cancer diagnosis and as a keen walker myself, I’m delighted to support Bowel Cancer UK’S Walk Together.

Walk Together is a sponsored fivemile walk to bring people together so that they can show their support for those undergoing treatment, remember loved ones we have lost and raise funds to help stop bowel cancer. It’s for people of all ages and abilities.

Sign up to Walk Together in Edinburgh on Saturday September 23 2017 or to receive a fundraising pack with everything you need to hold your own memorable walk. Visit : bowelcanceruk.org.uk/ walktogether

Julia Bradbury TV presenter and Bowel Cancer UK patron Dear Editor, I’m aware of the devastating impact a diagnosis of gynaecological cancer can have, not just on the woman involved but also her partner, her family and friends.

That’s why I’d like to make more people aware of the signs and symptoms of gynaecological cancer (womb, ovarian, cervical, vaginal and vulval), particularly during September which will be Gynaecological Cancer Awarness Month.

More than 21,000 women in the UK are diagnosed each year with a gynaecological cancer, which equates to 58 diagnoses each day. Yet research by the leading women’s gynaecological cancer charity, The Eve Appeal, has revealed alarmingly low knowledge among women of the disease.

It’s also vital for men to be more aware. So I’m backing The Eve Appeal’s call for men to support the women in their lives to get to know their bodies better – to be more aware of the signs to look out for – it may just save their lives.

So please, help create a future where fewer women develop and more women survive gynaecological cancers.
