‘Goodnight my beautiful son’

Poignant tribute from mother

- Stefanie Mccourt

The devastated mum of a Hamilton man found dead in the River Clyde has paid tribute to both of her sons following the tragedy.

Police said that the body of Jamie Mcculloch, of Whitehill, was recovered from the river, near Kirkfieldbank, on Friday following a six-day search.

The 27-year-old had been reported missing after leaving a friend’s house in the Lanark area in the early hours of Sunday, August 27.

Police Scotland said on Monday (September 4) that, following a post mortem, there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

Jamie’s devastated family had appealed for help and support online as the search progressed through the week.

And on Monday, his heartbroken mum, Fiona Mcculloch, posted on Facebook of her pride in both Jamie, and his younger brother, Craig.

She said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported our family in this tragic time.

“But my heart goes out to my youngest son Craig who has shown such tremendous love and devotion to his big brother and has made us so proud of both our sons.

“Life has changed forever but our memories, all of them good, live on. Goodnight my beautiful son, and thank you to my other beautiful son.”

Condolences were also paid online to Jamie’s wife, Siobhan, who appealed for help in finding her husband.

Among those who commented on Siobhan’s posts was Michelle Mcghie, daughter of Jimmy Mcghie, whose body was sadly found in Garrion Burn on August 28.

She said: “So sorry to hear about this devastating news. I am the daughter of Jimmy Mcghie who was found earlier in the week.

“I understand the pain and suffering that you are feeling right now. My heart and thoughts are with you and your family. Sleep tight Jamie.”

Jamie’s brother Craig had posted regularly on social media in the days after he disappeared, urging followers to share links and posts in a desperate bid to find him.

In an emotional Facebook post on Sunday, Craig said: “As I am sure you are all well aware, my amazing big brother’s body was recovered from the River Clyde on Friday.

“The help, support and selflessness of so many of you who have helped in the search has touched all our hearts. Whether you shared a post, sent your love to us or helped out in the search, you have all gone above and beyond to help us, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

“I know for a fact Jamie would be so overwhelmed by the love we have been shown, thank you.

“My brother was so much more than many of you will know. An absolute gent with a tough exterior and a heart of gold. Jamie may not be physically with us anymore but he will live on in all our hearts.

“To hear the impact Jamie had on so many people’s life is humbling and makes me so proud to call him my big brother.

“I promised him I would take care of Siobhan and I will. I promised him I would do him proud and I will. Everything I will achieve is for you.

“There are so many memories we will not get to share Jamie and I don’t know how I will ever come to terms with this. However I have a seemingly endless library of good memories (and a fair few not so good ones) that I will cherish forever, and I know you will be looking down as I make new ones with our beautiful family.

“You are as much a part of me as I am of you. We confided in each other and I trust you with my life. We love you so much. Sleep tight.”
