It’s hard to Trump this year’s festival

Bothwell pokes fun at US President

- Shirley Bartynek

Bothwell Scarecrow Festival returned this year – and villagers have once again been enjoying some cheeky digs at US President Donald Trump.

The billionaire businessman first made an appearance at the popular annual event last year, when he was still a candidate running for the White House.

And now that he is the leader of the free world, residents have stepped up their efforts and have been poking fun at him by putting up effigies around the village.

Joe Mulholland of Bothwell Scarecrow Festival said: “I think we have six Donald Trump themed scarecrows this year, and they have proven to be a hit with our scarecrow fans.

“I am sure Donald would find them amusing.

“I’ll maybe tweet him a few of the photos.”

Last year, residents gave Trump a rocket over his bid to become US president – with an effigy of him with his finger hovering over the nuclear button.

And this time round, they have been making fun of his controversial proposal to build a wall on the US border with Mexico.

Even Marvel superheroes The Avengers have been called into action in Bothwell.

Iron Man, War Machine and the Black Panther feature on a design that says ‘Saving the USA from Trump’.

Another scarecrow had President Trump on a balcony enjoying the acclaim of the crowd.

Residents have also been getting into the spirit of the occasion by creating a whole host of scarecrows for the Super Scarecrow Street competition.

Joe added: “Super Scarecrow Street has once again been a huge success, creating community spirit within neighbourhoods, which is at the core of why we do this.”

Activities during the scarecrow festival event have also included football, cycling and 5K and 10K fun runs, a farmers market and a kids’ disco.

The playground at Bothwell Primary was also transformed on Saturday with a funfair, stalls, toddlers’ zone and a climbing wall.

They event culminated in the Grand Scarecrow Parade on Sunday, September 3. Sunday’s events also featured music, dancers, races and much more fun for families.
