World’s biggest coffee morning lasts three weeks for busy Ann

- Kirsten Mcstay

A Hamilton woman is on a mission to raise as much money as she can for Macmillan Cancer Support by hosting some ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ events.

Ann Hardie will visit St Mark’s Primary School this Friday and host a lunch for staff.

The charity champ said that she was looking forward to visiting her granddaughter Cara’s school again this year to raise money for something close to her heart, as she lost her husband Danny to cancer in 2006.

Every year she and her daughter Nicola bake for various Macmillan fundraising events in the month of September.

The St Mark’s Primary event will have raffles, tea, cakes and sandwiches and all proceeds go to the Macmillan Cancer Support.

Ann has been hosting a World’s Biggest Coffee Morning for nine years and vows she will continue to do it for many more.

She said: “Holding the coffee mornings and dinners really does something for me and my daughter Nicola.

“We love to get in the kitchen and make things, whether it’s cakes or full dinners – it’s very rewarding.

“On the run-up to the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, I am always doing everything I can to raise as much money as possible.

“There is usually three weeks worth of events we do round about this time.

“The smallest amount, even a pound, goes a long way and we are so thankful to everyone that comes along and supports us.”

Ann also holds an annual event in her house which runs all day and sometimes into the small hours and this year is expecting around 26 people.

She has organised raffle prizes which include a month’s gym membership, a handmade blanket, a signed Celtic football, a makeup session and a photo shoot.

Although the official World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is on September 29, Macmillan are happy for people to hold events on a day that suits them.

The money raised will help Macmillan fund specialist nurses, new cancer centres and grants to support people living with cancer who have financial problems.
