New change to bin collection

Grey bins emptied every three weeks

- Robert Mitchell

Letters are being sent to all households this week by North Lanarkshire Council, informing residents about changes to household bin services which come into effect from October.

People will now have their grey bins collected once every three weeks.

Food and garden waste will be collected fortnightly in a single bin.

Paper and card will be collected in a single bin once every three weeks.

And glass, metal and plastic will also be collected in a single bin once every three weeks.

North Lanarkshire Council say they approved the changes to bin collections in a bid to meet strict national recycling targets and invest money in household waste recycling centres. Every household will still receive a weekly collection and it will be the same collection day every week.

“Changes to the bin service are necessary to recycle more of our domestic rubbish and achieve national recycling targets, as well as saving money which can be invested in other local services,” said Councillor Michael Mcpake, convener of the Infrastructure Committee.

“Our service will allow residents to recycle as much of their waste as possible, and for the council to dispose of it efficiently and with minimum impact on the environment.

“To ensure residents know what these changes mean for them, we are providing clear information to all households over the next few weeks and I would ask people to read the letter and leaflet carefully.”

At present there are five different bins at properties:

• Residual (grey bin) − contains all waste not captured by any other kerbside scheme;

• Glass (blue bin with green lid) − single bin for all colours of glass;

• Commingled dry recyclate (blue bin) − all paper, card, metal and plastic;

• Garden waste (brown bin) − collected fortnightly for 34 weeks of the year (March to November); and

• Food waste − via a twocaddy system for food waste only.

The new scheme will see a reduction in the number of bins collected and a change in what goes in bins. Now, the bin allocation is: • Residual (grey bin) − continues to capture all waste not captured by kerbside scheme;

• Recycling 1 (blue bin) − will capture paper and card only;

• Recycling 2 (blue bin with green lid) − glass, metal and plastic;

• Food/garden − combined organic collection that will service properties on a fortnightly basis.

Every household will have at least one of their bins collected weekly.

Information roadshows are being held across North Lanarkshire where staff will be available to explain the changes and answer any questions from residents.

The team will be in Motherwell at the Asda store on Sunday, September 17, from 10am to 2pm.
