Scarecrow fest’s success

-

This year’s Bothwell Scarecrow Festival was a great demonstration of community spirit, said the organisers at the close of the nine-day event.

The seventh festival featured attractions including a food festival, football, cycling, 5K and 10K fun runs, a farmers’market, a kids disco and last Sunday’s Grand Scarecrow Parade.

Bothwell Scarecrow Committee vice chairman Joe Mulholland said they were delighted with this year’s festivities and described last weekend’s atmosphere as “phenomenal.”

Mr Mulholland added:“we had brought it forward a week, so the schools weren’t back long.

“With a week to go there weren’t as many scarecrows as previous years, but the community spirit prevailed and I believe we had between 400 and 500 hundred again.

“The quality was very high and the ideas were fresh and inventive. All our events were very well attended or even sold out which is a great encouragement to us.

“The feedback has been very positive – especially regarding the community spirit we are creating. This is at the core of why we do this.”

And Sunday’s wet weather for the Grand Scarecrow Parade didn’t lessen villagers’and organisers’enthusiasm.

Mr Mulholland said:“to expect sunshine for all nine days is a lot to ask. Sunday’s forecast was poor but we were lucky and the scarecrow parade had a great turnout.

“We had buskers and street entertainers getting the crowds warmed up for the parade’s passing.

“The weather gods must have missed the memo as the skies opened with an hour to go but it didn’t dampen our spirits.”
