Building for success

Donation to tae kwon do school

- Shirley Bartynek

A Larkhall school of tae kwon do has been handed a cash boost from a housebuilder.

Darjay School of Tae Kwon Do has received £750 as part of the Persimmon Homes West Scotland Healthy Communities campaign.

The scheme will see Persimmon give away more than £600,000 to sporting causes across the UK over the next 10 months, with an overall top national prize of £200,000 in addition to numerous regional donations.

Going from strength to strength, the school has recently competed in several competitions resulting in medal wins and black belt grading.

Instructor Hayley Duncan, said: “We are delighted to receive such generous funding from Persimmon Homes.

“The money will make such a difference to the school, helping us to reinvest into the club whether it be for students outfits, protective gear, equipment or competing costs. It’s fantastic to see a successful company giving back to the community.”

Every month this year, Persimmon Homes West Scotland will hand out £750 to either a sports team, or individual aged 21 years and under in the area, with the money to be spent on kit, equipment, coaching or facilities.

A shortlist of 30 will then be created for a national final to be decided on a public vote, with the winning club or individual receiving £200,000 to create a long-lasting legacy and two runners-up receiving £50,000 each.

The new fund is in addition to the £720,000 the company already donates through its hugely successful Community Champions scheme each year.

Doug Law, managing director for Persimmon Homes West Scotland, said: “We are proud to support the Darjay School of Tae Kwon Do.

“The school provides the perfect opportunity to keep fit and meet like-minded people. That’s what Healthy Communities is all about.

“I wish them every success in the future.”
