Dalziel fade as newcomers gleam

-

Very little went Dalziel’s way on Saturday as they crashed to an emphatic 81-0 defeat at home to Newton Stewart.

However, at least the Motherwell side were able to hand debuts to Thomas’ Quigley and Tominey, albeit not particularly happy occasions for them to remember.

The Wigtown side were

keen to prove themselves at this level and got off to a great start when full-back Tyrell Wilson scooped up a spilled ball and crashed over after four minutes, with Fraser Morton converting for a 7-0 lead.

That put Newton Stewarts’tails up and following a line-out and driving maul Jason Mckie got the ball down for a 12-0 lead after 10 minutes.

The Reds simply didn’t look back after that and added a further three tries before the interval, through debutant James Mcmiken, Morton and Jamie Muir, with Morton slotting two conversions for a 31-0 lead.

Some inspired substitutions in the second half gave the Reds a further lift and they added another try through Mckie, with Morton adding the extras for 38-0.

Things then got messy for Dalziel, with Newton Stewart scoring a further seven tries through the impressive Ewan Dewar – who set up a few of the tries – Muir (3) Morton, and Robbie and Mark Mccormick, with Morton converting four of them.

There is little doubt that Dalziel were under-par and under-strength, but they will be looking for a better performance and result when they travel to Ardrossan Academicals on Saturday.
