End of the safari

Say final farewell to animals

- Shirley Bartynek

A stampede of giant safari animals that were enjoyed by tens of thousands of people in Hamilton this summer are coming together one last time.

They have gathered in the Regent and New Cross shopping centres for a final farewell before they are auctioned off for charity.

So if you want to grab any more pictures with the popular animals, then you have until next Wednesday, September 27.

The free tourist trail was organised by Hamilton Business Improvement District (BID) and the array of giant animal sculptures took up residence throughout the town in parks, streets, shops and open spaces. It captured the hearts and imaginations of people young and old, from far and wide.

Gareth Walker, manager at the BID, said: “We are looking forward to bidding one last farewell to The BIG Stampede animals that have touched the hearts of so many this summer – they are certainly going to be missed.

“The BIG Stampede has been two years in the making and a lot of hard work has gone in to ensuring its success. On behalf of BID, I would like to say a big thank you to all involved. We would now like to invite visitors old and new to come and wish the animals good luck in person for the auction ahead. We’re looking forward to supporting the charity at the auction and finding out the new homes that the animals are going to while raising valuable funds for a very worthwhile cause.”

The animals will be auctioned off to raise money for Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.

They spent ten weeks on the streets of Hamilton over the summer. In addition, 15,000 Lanarkshire pupils were responsible for the bloat of almost 80 baby hippos that formed ‘The Little Stampede’.

The live auction will take place on Friday, September 29, at Hamilton Town House. See thebigstampedeauction.com/lite-ui/#home to register early interest.
