Mentoring charity COVEY welcomes MP’S support

- Leona Greenan

Hamilton charity COVEY Befriending welcomed Angela Crawley MP to their office in the town.

The Lanark and Hamilton East representative was at the mentoring service to discuss how she can help them.

COVEY provide mentoring and befriending services to vulnerable young people and families in Lanarkshire.

Ms Crawley said: “COVEY is a wonderful organisation, who for 25 years have helped young people and families in Hamilton and Lanark. It was great to meet them and to discuss the ways in which we can work together for our communities.”

Following the visit, COVEY’S project leader Rhoda Reid said the charity will now take a stall at a jobs fair the MP has organised in Lanark Memorial Hall on Friday, November 3.

Ms Reid said: “It’s wonderful to meet and talk with our local MP, who is so engaged with the community and finding practical ways to help people.

“With such a clear link between employment and wellbeing, helping people gain the confidence to pursue work is a big factor in our services. It’s also an important aspect for our volunteers, and we love to help them pursue their careers and dreams.”

COVEY was originally set up in response to a need identified by the Children’s Panel as an intervention into the cycle of the same children reappearing before them.

The thinking behind it is that young people would benefit from a reliable supportive adult volunteer, who would provide two-hour weekly befriending sessions.

They have recently expanded to provide adult and family mentoring to the parents and carers of the young people they help. Through this service, participants are able to overcome the challenges that can limit their potential, employment opportunities and well-being.

COVEY matches a vulnerable parent or guardian with a mentor, who then provides emotional and caring support for the family to access statutory services so that they can improve their lives.

The befriending relationship provides a stable and responsible adult role model in their life.
