Milton view Buzz surrounds Mosquito

-

There were two stories that dominated the Advertiser’s social media channels this week.

The first to catch our readers’ attention online was our story about the controversial “mosquito” device that has been installed at Hamilton Central train station.

This anti-loitering device was put in place in July this year and now Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse MSP Christina Mckelvie has called for a ban on its use.

The device, which can only be heard by young people, was put in place following reports of anti-social behaviour at the station which was branded “the worst in Scotland”.

Yvonne Law posted on Facebook: “Jeezo, deffo should be banned.”

Zøë Elizabeth said: “What kind of torture method is this? I mean, I can hear it and I’m not exactly standing being a wee ned so why should I and all the other ‘well-behaved’ people under 30 suffer from it?”

Rhona Mcintosh said: “Keep it. Stations are not the place to be hanging about.”

Julie Higgins added: “Keep it! Past few weeks I’ve been able to cross the bridge without weaving through the path of fighting, hormone-charged aggressive inconsiderate individuals.

“I’ve been able to cross without feeling intimidated or cautious. I don’t have a problem with young groups of people wanting to hang out around well lit, security camera covered areas but they don’t need to make it a daunting or intimidating experience for people passing through.”

Susan Adams posted: “The law needs to change, decent members of public shouldn’t have to put up with the anti-social behaviour of youths anywhere, but no point holding your breath cause it won’t change far to soft.”

Xtine Reid said: “All it does is move the problem elsewhere and why should young people and toddlers even have to suffer this? Police should stop making petty excuses and deal with the problem.”

Annmarie Sneddon added: “When I saw the covered bridge being built at this station, I just knew it would become a hangout spot.

“I appreciate it’s needed for the lifts they’ve installed at the station but it doesn’t need to be covered.

“These repellant things are no use when young people are passed out on the stairs, vomiting pure vodka. Give these young people somewhere to go and they won’t need to hang about train stations.”

Paige Easton said: “Putting aside the fact that most of you are stereotyping young people, you’re also discriminating against them and the last time I checked age is a protected characteristic under the Equality’s Act.

“Maybe if you all spent more of your time trying to understand why these young people are loitering in the bus station and are engaging in anti-social behaviours, then expressing concerns to local councillors, street work youth teams and charities that support young people in the area rather than moaning about it on Facebook, you would get somewhere.”

Another story to dominate the Advertiser’s social media headlines was our article on Hamilton man James Kane, who appeared on the hit TV show Come Dine With Me last week.

Hamilton super fan James dished up a winning menu to scoop first place in the hit TV show Come Dine With Me on Channel Four. Viewers tuned in last Tuesday to see the town being put under the spotlight.

The programme featured the famous mausoleum and some hilarious one-liners from James on his passion for his home town.

Those of you who tuned in to see James in action were entertained by the show.

Isabel Cooper posted on Facebook: “Well done James watch it all the time.”

Angela Hunter said: “It was brill. He must have mentioned Hamilton a hundred times.”

Sarah Mccarvil added: “It was so funny. Could do with more comedy on TV.”

Kellyann Craw said: “James was amazing! I couldn’t stop laughing at his Hamilton banter.”

Joyce Mccabe posted: “Watched it brill.”

Kelly Cook said: “He was brilliant, now following me on Twitter.”

Clare Anderson said: “He did Hamilton proud.”

Karen Lindsay added: “Well done. I’m from Hamilton and this made my day.”

Liz Balmer said: “So funny! Watching it at moment.”

Patricia Coggans said: “He was hilarious! Well done, James.”
