Convincing victory pulls Wishaw up into third

Wishaw clocked up a creditable 6-3 win away to Thorniewoo­d United to clinch third spot in the Central First Division, three points behind leaders Benburb and with a game in hand.

Wishaw opened the scoring through a Jonathan Boal own-goal, but United’s Damon Welsh levelled from the spot.

Dean Kindlan, Barry Grant and Vinnie Mcguire took the score to 4-1 at half-time, with Damon Welsh netting for United from another penalty.

Ali Morgan made it 4-2, Mcguire took the score to 5-2 and Dan Kindlan sealed the points at 6-2 before Graeme Crawford scored a third.

Wishaw boss John Brogan (above) said:“thorniewoo­d played really well for a spell, but we were 4-1 ahead at half-time and held out to keep our place close to the top group.”

Lesmahagow recorded their first win in four starts with a 4-2 victory at home to mid-table Neilston.

Jordan Whitefield opened the scoring from a Jordan Lithgow cross, Neilston equalised through Allan Diack, then Michael Brunton netted off a Steven Higgins corner to make it 2-1 at half-time.

Diack scored again for Neilston, but Higgins hit a superb late double to end the game at 4-2.

Boss Robert Irving said: “It was much better defensivel­y and the individual effort was there to get the win.”

Forth lost 2-1 at East Kilbride Thistle after Barry Mcgeachan had given them an early lead.

Blantyre Vics lost 1-0 at home to Rossvale.

In the Super First Division a Mark Canning hat-trick and a goal from Jon Mcstay weren’t enough for Larkhall Thistle, who lost 5-4 at home to Rutherglen Glencairn.

Ryan Innes was sent off, and Glens scored the winner seven minutes into stoppage time.
