Hot and bothered over sauna door wait

Out of action for 14 weeks

- Shirley Bartynek

Leisure centre users have hit out South Lanarkshire Council over the time it has taken to have a door repaired at one of their facilities.

Larkhall Leisure Centre’s sauna in the facility’s health suite has been closed to users for more than 14 weeks because of a problem with a door.

Users have hit out at the time it has taken to fix the door to the area, asking why it has taken so long.

One elderly user, who asked not to be named, said: “There are a lot of us who like to go along to the centre and use all the facilities including the health suite, however it has been closed for weeks now.

“We still pay for the full price of a membership despite not being able to use all the facilities.

“We’ve heard that the new door is coming from Sweden but we think it must be gold plated or something for it to take this long. It’s a joke; I’m pretty sure the authority could get their hands on a new door quicker, maybe from B&Q.”

When the Advertiser contacted the council about the problem this week they responded by saying the door had arrived on Tuesday, September 26.

The general manager of South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, Gerry Campbell, said: “I am pleased to say a new sauna door has now been delivered and fitted at Larkhall Leisure Centre.

“It is essential for the safe use of the sauna that the door fits correctly and therefore it had to be made to measure by the manufacturer and shipped from Sweden. It should have been delivered earlier this month but due to issues outwith our control the shipment was delayed.

“The steam room and jacuzzi remained fully operational while we resolved this issue and the health suite remained open throughout.”
