Hamilton thrashed

Celtic run riot at Superseal

- Mark Gillespie

Hamilton Accies Two goals in each half saw Hamilton Accies fall to a 4-0 defeat at home to Celtic as the SWPL resumed.

A third successive defeat was a frustratingly familiar storyline for boss Gary Doctor as he tries to boost his side’s morale.

He said: “Again we just gave ourselves too much to do.

“The two first-half goals were from situations where we should have defended better.

“We haven’t dealt with balls into the box and so just didn’t give ourselves a chance in the game.

“We’re not giving much away in open play, but we undo all the hard work by giving these sloppy goals away.

“It’s not any easier at the other end, when your team is down in numbers.

“We had to fight back without recognised forwards or wingers on the pitch.”

Missing captain Gill Inglis, along with a host of other first-team picks, Doctor lost Deborah Mcleod to injury in the final minute of the match.

Sunday’s game at the Superseal was a contest that Celtic were in control of throughout, although they were assisted by some generous defending by Accies.

Hamilton had weathered a tough opening 20 minutes, but Natalie Ross put Celtic ahead from close range six minutes later after the hosts had failed to deal with Kirsty Howat’s corner.

Celtic doubled their lead in almost identical fashion in 42 minutes, Sarah Ewens finishing after Hamilton failed to deal with a Howat cross.

Hamilton tried to get into the game in the second half but the result wasn’t in much doubt, as they didn’t trouble keeper Megan Cunningham.

Ewens made sure with her second of the game in 72 minutes, then turned provider five minutes from time, crossing for Ross to tap in her own second of the game.

It doesn’t get much easier for Hamilton as they travel next week to face on-form second-top Hibs, before turning their attention to a potential six-pointer against Aberdeen the following weekend.

Doctor added: “Obviously it’s going to be very difficult for us away from home next week.

“We competed well against Hibs earlier in the season, but we just need to keep working hard and things will hopefully start to turn.”
