Wishaw soared into second place in the Central First Division after thumping St Roch’s 5-1.

The sides started the day in third and fourth place, respectively, but a fourth win from five matches left Wishaw three points behind leaders Benburb, with a game in hand and a better goal difference of two.

Six regulars missed out due to the holiday weekend, including defender Barry Eley, midfielder Craig Crawford and strikers James Coffey and Michael Collander, but an early goal gave them an advantage that they never looked like conceding.

With six minutes on the clock Vinnie Mcguire fired in a cracking free kick from about 30 yards out on the left, to give Wishaw a 1-0 interval lead.

Dan Kindlan netted with a rightfoot drive in 47 minutes and Mcguire fired over before he latched onto a good pass and side-stepped defenders before driving in the second.

Mcguire clinched his hat-trick in 71 minutes when he rounded off a Dean Kindlan pass with a crisp drive.

Kevin Barry Grant made it 5-0 with a well-taken free kick in 76 minutes, before Rock scored a penalty in stoppage time.

Manager John Brogan said: “We did well, especially as we were without six players, so I was pleased and I thought some of the goals were outstanding.

“It was also a good day for the young boys who came in, Dillon Young (17) on loan from Stirling Albion and Steven Smith on loan from Alloa.

“It was also good to see Gerry Watt and Andy Duffy back in the squad.”

Mcguire said: “I thought we did really well, especially with six bodies down.

“We played football when we needed to, and I like taking free kicks, so I was delighted.”
