Stamp visitors take Society around the globe
The Lanarkshire Philatelic Society gave a warm welcome on Friday evening (September 29) to their ‘friends from the East’.
Members of the Scottish Philatelic Society in Edinburgh travelled to Hamilton and presented some interesting displays.
Richard Cuthbertson displayed stamps of Macau (SE China) issued after the revolution in 1910.
John Law took members to South Africa and gave a wonderful display of ‘definitives’ issued between 1926 and 1954.
Eric Mason travelled north-east to Ceylon – and gave much amusement to members with a great display of misprints, forgeries and misplaced colours.
And Mike Humphries displayed stamps and covers issued during the Allied occupation of Germany – with interesting issues from different the French, Russian, American and British zones.
Lanarkshire member Alan Wishart led the audience in thanking the guests for giving “such an interesting and surprising set of displays and giving fascinating information of the history of the countries presented”.
The society’s next meeting will be in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton, this Friday, October 6, at 7.30pm. Member Ken Norris will present his display of ‘British Writers’. Anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history and postcards is very welcome to attend.
