Cameronian Hall shuts its doors

- Shirley Bartynek

A long-established and well used hall in Larkhall has been shut down.

The Cameronian Hall in the town’s Wellgate Street which has been used by groups since the 1970s was closed by South Lanarkshire Council with immediate effect earlier this month.

General Manager of South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Gerry Campbell explained the reason for the sudden closure.

He said: “Cameronian Hall has been closed with immediate effect while we investigate concerns over the condition of the building. We apologise for the inconvenience caused to hall users, staff are putting every effort into finding alternative accommodation for regular users.

“Until building a full survey of the has been completed we cannot speculate over duration of the closure.”

Larkhall Dog Training Club, who have used the hall for years, have now been left without a place to hold their classes.

Jean Smith a member of the club said: “Our Dog Training Club has used this hall for years and now we have not where to hold our classes as school halls cannot be used by dogs.

“Three weeks ago around September 5 was the last time we the were allowed in. We just started our new season when we noticed a bump that had appeared on one part of the hall’s wooden floor.

“Next thing we where told hall is closed. No indication of when it would or if it will reopen.

“Our club has been trying to find another suitable hall but so far nothing. We have used the hall every week since the late 1970s so we are worried it will not open again.” Councillor Andy Carmichael will host two surgeries this Saturday.

The first will be held at Margaretvale Sheltered Housing Complex from 10am-10.45am, with the second being held from 11am-11.45am in Hareleeshill Community Wing.
