Columba club closes Building no longer viable
A popular social club that has been established in Blantyre for more than 40 years closed down at the weekend.
Blantyre Columba Club, in the town’s Carlowrie Avenue, shut their doors for the last time on Sunday, October 8.
The Knights Of St Columba, Council 490, Blantyre, this week thanked the people of Blantyre and Hamilton and the surrounding districts, who have supported the social club over the past 44 years.
Michael Madden, Grand Knight, Ksc, Council 490, Blantyre, said: “After much deliberation, we have reached this difficult decision, based on several factors.
“The overriding factor being that the current building which houses the club, requires a level of investment, which in the present trading climate, we feel is not economically viable.”
Blantyre Columba Club has been wholly owned and operated for its entire life by the Knights Of St Columba, Council 490, Blantyre.
The Knights Of St Columba is a Catholic men’s charitable organisation.
Mr Madden added: “Our council is in no way affected by our decision to close our social club.
“We will continue to carry out our charitable works in Blantyre and surrounding areas.
“In the immediate future, we will be based between the parishes of St Joseph’s and St John Ogilvie, Blantyre, and we can be contacted through these parishes, too.
“We look forward to serving the people of our local communities for many years to come.”
