Burns on fire as double pulls Shotts clear of drop

-

Danny Burns hit a double as Shotts Bon Accord beat fourth-placed Rossvale 3-2 to move clear of the Central First Division relegation zone.

Burns (pictured) hit the post in the first minute, and three minutes later Kit Cummings fired ‘Bonny’in front. Ally Martin, Ryan Kennedy and Burns (twice) all had chances before half-time, but ’Vale levelled from the spot in 54 minutes.

Martin’s spot-kick two minutes later was parried by the keeper and Burns lashed the rebound into the net, then in 66 minutes Burns made it 3-1. Gary Giffin pulled a goal back in 75 minutes.

Thorniewood United lost 3-2 away to league leaders Benburb.

Aaron Neil scored for ’Wood, Bens made it 1-1 at the break and opened up a 3-1 lead in the second half, with Derek Ferguson heading in a late goal for the Viewpark side.

Manager Gerry Bonham said: “We’re managing to get some goals, but without managing to win.”

Blantyre Vics went down 2-1 at Yoker Athletic, with manager John Gibson commenting: “we’re making chances, missing them, and then losing goals.” ross Caldwell pulled a goal back from a header, and in the closing minutes Peter Byrne twice had shots saved by the Yoker goalkeeper’s legs.

Lesmahagow face a lengthy spell on the sidelines as unfortunate circumstances leave them idle until late October.

Their game at East Kilbride Thistle was called off on Saturday and manager Robert Irving said:“i suggested that we switch the game to Craighead Park, but East Kilbride refused. Now we face a blank weekend because of the Junior International competition in Glasgow, then an idle Saturday because we’re the ‘odd team out’ in the Central League Second Division.

“That means our first game in October will be the Scottish Cup tie on the 28th.”
