Elsie’s message for over-50s after check

Screening saved her life

- Kirsten Mcstay

A Hillhouse woman is urging all ladies over 50 to get their breasts screened after discovering that she had breast cancer, despite having no symptoms.

Elsie Anderson was encouraged by friends to get her breasts screened, and with no signs of any abnormalities, she decided to go anyway.

Elsie (71) said she didn’t wait around and made an appointment right away.

She said: “I made an appointment as soon as I could for a screening which was held in Morrison’s carpark a few months ago.

“I was given a recall within two weeks and it turns out I had breast cancer, despite having no symptoms at all.

“The screening only took ten minutes to get and it saved my life. I urge everyone between the age bracket to get checked no matter if you have symptoms or not.

“I caught it early, but had I not went to get screened it could be very different.

“Doctors have said they got all the cancer and I have to go back in December for a check-up.

“I had been receiving my treatment at the Beatson and everyone has been fantastic.”

During the last round of breast screening in 2013 around 10,000 women in Hamilton and Blantyre attended their appointment.

Women aged over 70 are not invited for an appointment but are welcome to call the screening centre on 0141 800 8800 to make an appointment.

Women under 50 should also ensure they are “breast aware” to help them spot breast changes early.
