Dates for 2017 Remembrance events

-

People in Hamilton are being reminded of the dates for this year’s Remembrance events.

The town’s Joint Ex-services Association and Royal British Legion branch released details of services that will surround Armistice Day on Saturday, November 11.

The Legion issued an apology as this year’s Festival of Remembrance in Hamilton will not go ahead as it has done for the last 30 years.

A dedication service will take place as usual at the Garden of Remembrance near Hamilton’s top cross, at 11am on November 4.

On Remembrance Sunday, November 12, Remembrance crosses will be placed at the Cenotaph in the park, Bothwell Road, at 3pm (weather permitting, if not this will be moved to South Lanarkshire Council’s HQ in Almada Street).

The usual service at the Victoria Cross memorial in the town centre will take place at 10.45am on Monday, November 13.

Ian Forsyth MBE, convener of the Joint Ex-services Committee and a veteran of the Second World War, said: “It is that time again where we are asked to remember those who sacrificed their lives to preserve our freedom, not, as many might think, in just the two world wars, but in all the wars which have taken place globally in between.

“Due to illness we can’t produce our annual Festival of Remembrance, but the other events will carry on as usual.”
