Accies take major survival step

-

Hamilton Accies Women took a major step towards preserving their top-division status for next season as they coasted to a 2-0 win over Rangers at New Tinto Park.

It was a scoreline that didn’t flatter Gary Doctor’s side either, as goals in each half from Lori Gardner and Kodie Hay saw Accies grab a much-needed win.

With three games left Hamilton sit seven points clear of bottom side Aberdeen, with Doctor’s side visiting the Granite City next week, knowing a draw or win will be enough to secure their survival.

There was a touch of good fortune about Hamilton’s opener in 30 minutes as Dani Connolly’s cross was headed by Gardner but deflected off Rangers defender Chelsea Watson and into the net.

Amy Anderson and Emma Lyons went close to doubling Accies’lead but on the hour-mark Anderson released Teigan Mccann down the right and she found Hay in the middle to tap home.

Doctor said:“that was as well as we’ve played all year. We’ve given ourselves a great opportunity, going up to Aberdeen with a seven point gap.

“Obviously we want to go up there and win, but our challenge is to win as many points as we can in the remaining games.”

Doctor added:“everybody played their part. I thought Amy Anderson probably played as well as anybody this season, and our midfield three were great.

“We kept a clean sheet and are now seeing the benefits of a more settled front three. We’re now back to a full strength team and that just shows what we’re capable of.”
