Lest we forget

- Leona Greenan

People in Hamilton are being reminded of the Remembrance events that will take place over the coming days.

The town’s Joint Exservices Association and Royal British Legion branch have extended an invitation for the services surrounding Armistice Day on Saturday, November 11.

However, the Legion issued an apology as this year’s Festival of Remembrance in Hamilton will not go ahead as it has done for the last 30 years.

On Remembrance Sunday, November 12, Remembrance crosses will be placed at the Cenotaph in the public park, Bothwell Road, at 3pm (weather permitting, and if not this service will be moved to the banqueting hall at South Lanarkshire Council’s headquarters in Almada Street).

And the usual short service at the Victoria Cross memorial in the town centre will take place at 10.45am on Monday, November 13.

Ian Forsyth MBE, convener of the Joint Ex-services Committee, said: “It is that time of year again where we are asked to remember those who sacrificed their lives to preserve our freedom, not, as many might think, in just the two world wars, but in all the wars which have taken place globally in between.

“We have lost so many fathers, brothers and sons since the Second World War ended that a new memorial has been built behind the Cenotaph that stands in the public park, to ensure that we do not forget the many we still lose every year.

“But I wonder, how many have taken the time and energy to pay their respects and thanks to these men who are called upon to make the supreme sacrifice to ensure our safety and freedom?”
