THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

- By Alex Mcnee of Salvation Army, Hamilton

Remember, Remember? It’s okay when you have a good memory?

Sometimes mine is like a sieve! And when you have memory lapses, you often struggle even with the things you know. I have trouble remembering names, trouble remembering where I’ve left my keys, and if it wasn’t for my electronic organiser I would forget a lot more – even birthdays (sorry!). This coming weekend we, as a community, seek to remember actions and events which took place before many of us were born.

The number of survivors of the atrocities and deprivations of the two World Wars are becoming fewer. Their eye-witness testimony, if not already recorded, may soon be lost to us. And when this happens, our ability to remember the stark realities may also become lost to us. Thus we run the risk of repeating history rather than learning from it.

This coming weekend, as we remember the sacrifices made by those of earlier generations, let us resolve to live lives worthy of their legacy. Let us use the freedoms they secured to build a better world, not for the few but for the many, not just economically or materially, but with Justice, Equality, Safety, Unity and Stability for all.

As Jesus himself said:“i came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”
