MP lifts award for her work Angela Crawley ‘delighted’with win
A Hamilton politician has been named as one of the MPS of the Year.
Angela Crawley, SNP representative for Lanark and Hamilton East, was named ‘Newcomer Other Party MP of the Year’ at the Patchwork Foundation awards.
The awards recognise MPS who have “represented and work well with underrepresented, deprived and minority communities across the country”.
Ms Crawley received the title mostly due to work she has done as SNP spokesperson for Women and Equalities, and for her work with the Women and Equalities Select Committee.
She has played an active role in all committee inquiries, including on transgender equality; pregnancy and maternity discrimination; race disparity; inequalities faced by gypsy, Roma and traveller communities; the gender pay gap; sexual harassment and sexual violence in schools; and women in executive management positions.
Ms Crawley said: “It is an honour to have won the MP of the Year award. The Patchwork Foundation gives people from all backgrounds the opportunity to engage with democracy, and I am especially impressed with the work it has done to help young people from deprived communities achieve their full potential.
“I believe democracy works best when every part of society is included, and I have worked in my constituency to engage those who often felt left behind.
“I am very humbled to have been nominated for this award, and delighted to have won.”
Ms Crawley’s achievement drew praise from First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who said: “I’m proud to support the fantastic work of the Patchwork Foundation, which plays an important role in promoting the involvement of underrepresented groups and minority communities in parliament and politics.
“I’m delighted to see Angela Crawley recognised in this year’s Parliamentary Awards for her excellent work campaigning for social justice, and working to make politics more representative for everyone.”
I am very humbled to have been nominated for this award
