Temps: It’s so good to be back

Midfielder says he ignored instructions to sit deep

- Andy Mcgilvray

David Templeton said it was great to score on his return to Ibrox, but said Hamilton’s brilliant result against Rangers was the most important thing.

Temps put Accies on their way to a famous 2-0 win with the opener in 47 minutes, pouncing on an error by Ross Mccrorie to round Wes Foderingham and score.

The winger said Darren Lyon’s effort sealed the win, but was delighted to grab his fourth goal of the season.

Temps said:“it was nice to come here and get that goal. I had four years at Ibrox which I enjoyed, and it was nice to come back, but the most important thing was for us to win, no matter who scored. “It was nice to get that first goal and get the win. “Coming here, nobody expected us to win, but we knew in that changing room that we’ve been playing well, and we were positive we could go there and do well. “You need your keeper to be on top form and I thought Gary Woods was brilliant. “He made a few good saves and kept us in it at times, but to get that goal was a good time for us and the second one was the killer.”

Darren Lyon says it was a dream come true to score Hamilton’s clincher against Rangers at Ibrox, ending a nightmare year out through injury.

The midfielder disobeyed instructions from the bench by bursting forward to slam Greg Docherty’s cutback past Wes Foderingham with 10 minutes left to make sure the points were heading to Lanarkshire.

Lyon’s first goal of the season came against a side he played for as a youth – and the 22-year-old was grinning from ear to ear afterwards when he was told it was Hamilton’s first league win against Rangers at Ibrox since 1926.

Injuries have deprived Lyon of first-team appearances in the last two seasons, so it was a nice feeling for him afterwards.

He said: “I enjoyed it because I was here when I was younger, so going away and then coming back and scoring was kind of a dream come true, it was good.

“It was getting eachy-peachy; Rangers had a couple of chances after we scored, but as soon as we scored the second goal it killed it and they were just trying to launch the ball long.

“They weren’t panicking but they were going for it more.

“I don’t even know what I was thinking when I scored. I was absolutely gone, my legs were gone, I was so tired!

“The management team told me just before it to sit in and not to really run forward too much, so I kind of disobeyed their instructions a bit, but I put the ball in

the net, so I wasn’t too bothered.

“I’ll probably watch the goal back a couple of times and see what it’s like!

“It’s just nice to finally get a wee run on the park, to get back out there and play with the boys is good.

“Last year was probably up there with the worst ones I’ve had because it kept me out for so long.

“It took so long to get to the bottom of that but I’m over it now, I’m back playing, back fit and ready to go.

“It’s always good to come to a place like this and take the three points away, no matter what.”

Lyon’s goal came in 80 minutes and at a good time because Rangers had been bombarding the Hamilton box without getting past either a stubborn defence or a goalkeeper in top form in Gary Woods. Greg Docherty darted past James Tavernier on the left and cut the ball back for Lyon, who got past Danny Wilson to slam the ball low into the net before racing off to celebrate with the Hamilton supporters. Hamilton had stunned Ibrox in 47 minutes when David Templeton waited for Ross Mccrorie to attempt a passback, intercepted it and skipped past Foderingham to flick the ball into the net, despite the attempts of Lee Hodson to clear. It was a stunning piece of play by the on-form winger against his old club and was a hammer blow to Rangers who had passed up a number of chances by that point. Alfredo Morelos alone could have bagged a hat-trick by the interval and there were chances for Josh Windass and Wilson, with the hosts striking the bar twice.

That said, Templeton had Foderingham scrambling with a long-range shot shortly after his goal.

Goalkeeper Gary Woods made a string of top saves at crucial moments, while the defence threw themselves at everything, to the extent that Alex Gogic was sent off inside stoppage time as a lunge saw him pick up a second yellow card.

Lyon reckons Hamilton have shown good form of late, picking up a win against Dundee and a draw at home to Aberdeen in their last two games, and hopes that continues in a run that sees them host Hibs, travel to Hearts and entertain St Johnstone in their next three fixtures.

He said: “It will be another tough game against Hibs, we have a tough run of games coming up.

“We had Aberdeen last time, Rangers this time and Hibs next, so it’s a tough run but we’re looking forward to it.”
