Exciting reading

Kids’book Week fun

- Leona Greenan

David Livingstone Memorial Nursery class and Primary School took part in lots of exciting activities to celebrate Scottish Book Week.

At the beginning of the week, the infants and nursery class were treated to a teacher book swap where the teachers read their favourite Scots book and a Scottish sing-along with Mrs Mcnair.

They also had a special visit from Granny Story who read them her favourite stories.

Granny brought along her trolley which was filled with books and even Grandpa (the puppet) came out of the trolley to tell some stories.

All of the children were fully engaged in this reading event and were keen to talk about all of the books.

Furthermore, during the week the focus of P4-7’s literacy lessons was Scots book, The Eejits.

The children loved listening to the book read aloud in Scots dialogue and had great fun completing tasks related to the book. Activities included researching some Scots vocabulary, and creating a ‘disgusting’ menu for Mr Eejit for his meals for the day.

Children also wrote acrostic poems using names of characters and events in the book and completed a Mr Eejit/mrs Eejit fact file.

The full school then enjoyed a visit from the extremely talented Scottish illustrator, Mandy Sinclair, who gave them some top tips on how to create their own illustrations.

Acting principal teacher Jennifer Latimer said: “At the end of the week, parents were invited in for a book, bite and blether where the children showcased their learning from across the week and were presented with the Book Bug Bags.

“Primary 4 to 7 marked the event with a book-themed treasure hunt.

“The children had to solve riddles related to a variety of book covers and then work out an anagram, which spelt out the words, ‘I love reading!’

“It’s safe to say the week was a great success and the staff, children and parents were able to share and enjoy books and reading!”
