Brandon eyes up a world title fight Murray (12) takes the Euro title convincingly

Kickboxer Brandon Murray has set his sights on a world title fight after clinching his first European belt at the weekend.

Murray (12) beat Jamie Walker of Larry’s Kickboxing Gym in Ireland to the -42kg full contact title at Rivals Gym in Wishaw on Saturday.

The Hamilton Grammar firstyear pupil won every round on the judges’ scorecards, but felt that a recent illness prevented him from stopping his opponent.

Delighted mum Vicky says Brandon is going from strength to strength, but hinted that he might decide to go into boxing at some stage.

She said: “It’s another brilliant win under his belt.

“Brandon has several Scottish titles, a British title and now a European title; this is a step-up and a world title fight would be next for him, though he will have to defend the European title.

“Brandon won every round on the judges’ scorecard, which we found out after the fight, but he reckons that had he been at full fitness he would have stopped him.

“After we came back from the World Championships Brandon had a couple of weeks of total rest, but he picked up a cold just before the fight and wasn’t as prepared as he might have been.

“It didn’t hold him back, though, and the opposition coach came into the dressing room to talk to Brandon and [my husband] Brian, and said he’s one to watch, so that was really nice.

“Brandon’s buzzing that he won the title and he was totally confident before the fight, which is good.

“If you don’t have the right mentality you can have all the skill in the world and still lose the fight.”

On what is next for Brandon, Vicky said: “Kids his age don’t usually go for titles like that, it’s usually cadets, who are 15-plus, and people like that who have these titles, but with the amount of things Brandon has won, the decision was made that he could go for titles like that.

“After this it’s the world title and then he can’t go any further at this point, he would have to remain on that circuit.

“There has been some chat about Brandon maybe going into boxing and now we have to decide whether he wants to do that as a career or continue fighting on the circuit, so we need to work that out.

“He’s on a complete rest now until the new year, and then World Championship qualifiers start in February.”

Saturday’s fight was sponsored by Wilson’s Auto Repair Centre Ltd.
