Brave mum loses cancer struggle

‘It was just so quick’says heartbroken friend

- Shirley Bartynek

A Hamilton mum this week lost her battle against cancer.

Tributes were paid to brave Cindy Cannon, who was told she had a brain tumour and lung cancer just weeks ago.

The 41-year-old mum-of-two said had complained about being in physical pain for years – only for it to be dismissed as psychological.

Then she was given the horrific diagnosis that she had just a few weeks to live.

Friends and family held a series of fundraising events for the former Hamilton Grammar pupil in a bid to allow her to spend precious time with her children Marcus (18) and Caseyjane (9).

A successful dance night was held in ROC nightclub in Hamilton which raised thousands for Cindy.

And she was able to use the cash from various fundraisers to take her two children away on short breaks to Blackpool and Amsterdam.

She also enjoyed a spa break with her friends before passing on Monday afternoon.

Cindy’s heartbroken friend Marriann Mcneill, who helped raise the funds for her bucket list, this week paid tribute to a “real loyal friend.”

She said: “It was just so quick, we had managed to get Cindy for a spa break which she loved. Then she took an infection in her lung and was taken to hospital.

“We are all heartbroken. Cindy was just a good person and was always happy and such a loyal friend. She, like all of us, loved a night out and we really did have lots of great times together. She will be sorely missed by all of her friends.”

Just last month the Advertiser spoke to Cindy about her diagnosis and how she vowed to try to fight her illness for her children.

She explained her situation at that time: “Three weeks ago, I got up to get the kids ready for school and had a fall. I was sent to hospital and given a full body scan. It was at that point they found I had lung cancer and a 6cm tumour in my brain.

“For years, I complained to doctors about the pains in my legs but was told it was all in my head and I was stamped with a mental health label.

“Now I have just weeks left to live. It’s disgusting that now, because of this, my kids will be left without a mum.”

Cindy, who grew up in Burnbank, and later moved to Falkirk, vowed to stay strong for her children.

She added: “I am a fighter and will try to stay as strong as I can for my children. I’m not going to give-up. I want people to know that mistakes can be made and just because people give you a label that’s not what you necessarily are.”

A spokesperson for NHS Forth Valley previously told the Advertiser, said: “We would urge this patient and her family to get in touch with us direct so that we can look into the issues raised and answer any questions they have about the care and treatment provided.”
