A Blantyre teenager has scooped two prestigious disco dance awards after she stormed to success at one of Britain’s biggest competitions.

Mya Mcdade, a pupil at St John Ogilvie High, travelled to the renowned Blackpool Tower Ballroom to compete against the best young dancers from around the world. And the 13-year-old came first in both the Slowdance Superstar and Solo Freestyle sections of the Disco Kid Dance Competition. Mya said: “It just shows that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. “I was once a beginner looking up to all the Disco Kid legends, hoping one day I too would have that title. “If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone. “You just need to have determination, passion and work hard – but more than anything, never give up on your dream.” Mya has been dancing since the tender age of two and has attended the Disco Kid event for the last seven years, each year narrowly missing out on the top spot. In fact, over the last two years Mya has been runner-up in both the slow and solo freestyle sections, leading to her determination to finally seal the deal with first-place finishes at this year’s event.

Her proud mum Elaine, a dance teacher who owns Dance Central on Blantyre’s Station Road, said: “Mya was determined to follow her dreams – putting years of training, hard work and positive attitude into her dancing to win at Blackpool Tower Ballroom.

“We were so proud when she took the titles of Disco Kid Slowdance Superstar and Disco Kid Solo Freestyle, rightfully making her a Disco Kid legend.

“Disco Kid is the biggest freestyle dance competition there is. Any freestyle dancer looking to win the hardest competition ever should apply for this one, as you are up against the best dancers from all over the world.”

Mya’s determination to succeed in the dancing world is paying off for the teenager.

Earlier this year she was crowned the Music and Entertainment winner at the inaugural ‘Blantyre Oscars’ event, hosted by the Blantyre Telegraph Facebook page, and she is pictured below left with her prize.

She also won the S4-6 Best Individual section at the seventh annual Active Schools Secondary Dance Competition earlier this year, in which 17 South Lanarkshire schools competed against each other.

As well as having numerous Scottish and UK titles to her name, she melted hearts across the country with her teddy bear act when she made it to the final of Sky One series Got to Dance in 2010.
