Star tenor Alfie joins school choir for charity concert
A school choir were taken by surprise at the weekend when one of the world’s most renowned tenors joined them for an impromptu performance.
The Hamilton College Senior Choir were about to start singing in Glasgow’s Princes Square to help raise funds for Ayrshire charity Hansel, when fundraising manager Sheila Mclean spotted a very famous face in the crowd of Christmas shoppers – Alfie Boe.
She approached Alfie, who was performing at the SSE Hydro with Michael Ball the next day, and asked if he would like to sing with the choir.
Despite it being his day off, the tenor was only too happy to help and led the choir in a beautiful rendition of O’holy Night, drawing huge crowds and helping boost funds for the charity.
Best known for his role as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, the star brought the house down with a spellbinding performance of the Christmas classic.
Amazed Sheila said: “I couldn’t believe it when I spotted Alfie Boe shopping in Princes Square, and I thought why not ask if he would like to join the Hamilton College Choir. “He couldn’t have been nicer. “He was so interested in the work the charity does for people with learning difficulties and agreed to join the choir in song.
“He is just a lovely man and such a talented singer.
“The atmosphere was just electric when he was singing with the choir. Everyone had their phones out recording it – it was just magical.
“The students were absolutely thrilled, it was just an unforgettable experience.”
Acting head of music at Hamilton College, Roslin Thomas, who led the performance, accompanied by music teacher David Henderson on piano, was delighted for her young charges and said: “Alfie Boe agreeing to join us during an afternoon of shopping really does demonstrate true generosity in the spirit of Christmas.
“The afternoon was a magical experience for our children that will inspire them and hopefully live in their memories for a long time to come.”
